Be That Change That You Want to See
Mar 10, 2024
I came out of a training class thinking about those of you who want to share goodness in the world and who want to be inspired by the goodness in the world today.
One of the things that got me to think about was that one aunt that we just loved since we were a kid.
I thought about my Auntie Tina. Growing up, she was the one aunt, that I looked forward to visiting. My brother and I were always so excited to go and visit her and my cousins. One of the questions coming out of this class regarding my thoughts about my aunt was,
How was I as a kid, because of her? Was I fond of her because of the treats she gave us? Or because of all of the gifts she gave us? Or because of all of the things she did for us?
Or simply, was it because of how she made us feel, that she is still one of my favorite people in the world?
As a child, I used to be so excited around Christmas time because she always knew what we wanted to for Christmas, and maybe as a child, it was because of what we received.
But I am an adult now, and we don’t exchange gifts anymore, now that we have our own families, and I still love going to her house and I still love seeing her.
It truly is because of how she makes me feel about myself when I am with her even as an adult, and I am 43 years old as I write this.
But she makes me feel good every time I go to her house because of the love that comes out of her. I know that I am not special. I know she shares this love with all of her nieces and nephews. But somehow she makes me feel like I'm the only person in the room that matters. It sounds funny, but it is so true. I love my Auntie Tina.
It occurred to me in class that being who I liked, meant to be that person.
Let me state that again if you want to surround yourself around the happiness that maybe one person brings you, BE that person.
I want to be that person who can help inspire someone, who makes people feel good about themselves when they are around me.
Just like my aunt, I want to be the change that I want to see in my life, where I can appreciate what I have, feel blessed for what I have, and still want to make a good change everyday.
It was freeing to know that I have this power within me, and because of people like my auntie Tina in my life, I am able to inspire, feel inspired, and continue to create inspiration for others as she did for me.
